Volvo has two Polestar models, but both of them are four cylinder hybrids and one of them is a crossover. I still love Volvo for what they stand for and think they make beautiful cars, but they aren’t as quirky as they used to be and they certainly don’t cater to the enthusiast market as well as Toyota/Lexus.

Most of those issues have been fixed in the latest couple upgrades. There are still issues, but Volvo has been extremely helpful with these issues. If customers are willing I have a bunch that report glitches directly to Volvo though the car (this has to be enabled). They are really trying hard to get all of the bugs worked out.

Oil Filter (Volvo PN: 3850559) - Cross reference a PH5 or PH30 equivalent. AC Delco PF1218, K&N HP-2002, Fram Ultra XG5. Preferably a higher end filter with synthetic media. Spark Plugs (Volvo PN: 3858997) - Cross references AC Delco 41-101 / 12568387 or NGK ITR4A15. Been told those are the best two to trust.

Simple remedy for high oil consumption (piston ring defect)
If you have a Volvo 5 cylinder engine, chances are you are familiar with the high oil consumption issue. The reason is due to a design flaw in the piston rings, which are prone to clogging up with carbon deposits. As a result, the oil control ring can no longer scrape oil back into the crankcase, resulting in high oil consumption.

Volvo’s are very well made, but I would say that they are akin to many modern, well-built cars. They aren’t the “tanks” of old, but they have great fit and finish. They continue to be very safe and well-designed, but from an endurance perspective, no, I’d say that many brands are ahead of them there.

The last Volvo "made" 4-cylinder before the VEA, was the ones found in the first gen V40/S40. Those where based on the Volvo Moduler Engine, which started out as a inline 6-Cylinder (found on the 960, Mk1 V90/S90, Mk1 S80 and Mk1 XC90 before the Ford Shit i6), the 6-cylinder was later reworked to the gorgeous 5-cylinder first introduced in the 850.
